When I was paying off my student loans and living on a tight budget, I had to be pretty careful when I was making purchases. Big purchases could throw off my debt repayment schedule, and little purchases added up quickly. To stay on track and keep within my budget, shopping around and finding rock bottom prices was really important. Today I have a lot more flexibility in my budget, but that cost consciousness has stuck with me (in a good way) and whenever I’m making a purchase I always try to shop around a little first.
Today, with technology constantly at our fingertips, it pays to do a little due diligence before making even “small” purchases. I don’t have any of the “fancy” iphone apps that tell you where you can find the cheapest prices, but there are a few “secret” places widely known websites/retail establishments that save me money on a consistent basis.
Amazon
At our most recent vet visit we were told that the boo boo has some arthritis in his knees. This, apparently, is pretty common in small breed dogs and in shih tzus in particular. Thankfully it doesn’t appear to be causing him any pain, but as he is getting older we want to prevent any further deterioration. Our vet recommended we buy him a joint supplement called Dasuquin. One bag of 84 chews is selling for $58.49 on a popular pet supply website. One bag on Amazon only $39.80! A savings of nearly $20 per bag.
TJ Maxx/Marshalls
Since I’m trying to get back into shape, I needed wanted some new running gear. I have a few pairs of mesh shorts and some old running shoes, but I wanted to keep track of my mileage in a new pair of sneaks (plus I wore the old ones in the rain and they were getting pretty smelly-gross). Price of running tights at the local sporting goods store: $45.00. Price at Marshalls $24.99! Retail price for my Saucony running shoes $110.00, price I paid $39.99!
E-bay
Bf and I were doing a little shopping a couple of weekends ago when I found the above pair of Birkenstock Granada sandals at DSW (Discount Shoe Warehouse-love that place!). I liked them and considered purchasing them, but at nearly $90.00, I decided to wait and see if I could find them elsewhere. A quick google search revealed that they were selling for $129.95 at department stores. So I guess $90 was a deal, right? Wrong! I found the exact pair shown above (brand new never worn) on e-bay for just $38.93-including shipping! I’ve never owned a pair of Birkenstocks so I’m really excited to “join the club” and see what everyone is talking about. Personally, I don’t find them super attractive, but if they’re as comfortable as everyone says, then comfort trumps good looks for everyday wear.
