About a month ago a friend and I went to Chevy’s after work. If you don’t have a Chevy’s by you, it’s a chain Mexican restaurant that I have an extreme fondness for. The first Chevy’s I ever ate at was in Warwick, RI when I was in college. When Chevy’s and I “met” it was a like a match made in heaven. I loved their cheap Mexican food and delicious frozen margaritas and Chevy’s loved my American Express.

I brought so many of my college friends to Chevy’s I should have been on the payroll as a brand rep or spokesperson. Passed your final exams? We’re going to Chevy’s. Got into grad school? We’re going to Chevy’s! Birthday party? We’re going to Chevy’s and you’re wearing the sombrero and doing a birthday shot! OK…you get the idea.

Sadly many of the Chevy’s in the Northeast closed shortly after I finished college. So when I got to NYC and discovered that there was a Chevy’s I was beside myself with excitement. I was so pleased I almost squealed (seriously! and I’m not a “squealer”). Now that my love and I have been reunited, I like to convince my friends and colleagues to go to Chevy’s for happy hour. Unfortunately the menu items aren’t inexpensive like they are in the suburbs (it’s Times Sqare folks! There’s a reason those advertisements always say-valid at all locations except Times Square and Hawaii), but the drinks are! So my frugal comrades and I happily split an overpriced appetizer and indulge in a frosty beverage.

The last time a friend and I went we were seated upstairs. Thankfully as we were seated I had the foresight to ask our waiter about the happy hour specials. He let us know that the happy hour specials were only valid downstairs. Without thought, I kindly asked him if it would be OK for us to go back downstairs. I apologized and told he we hadn’t been told that the specials weren’t valid upstairs. He said it was no problem and we happily made our way back downstairs.

Not a Chevy’s Margarita, but it looks pretty, no?

As we did so, I looked around at all the “suckers” who’d been seated upstairs. I wonder if they’d been told that they were drinking full price margaritas? Maybe they don’t mind, or maybe once they sat down they didn’t want to bother to go downstairs, or maybe they were embarrassed to ask for the special. But, I’ll tell you who wasn’t embarrassed to move, this girl! I don’t “need” margaritas, but if I’m going to indulge in one every so often, I’d rather pay $5 than $10. If that makes me “cheap”, or “weird”, I’m totally fine with that.

Would you have moved to the bar or stayed and paid full price? Where’s your favorite hour hour establishment?

**This is not a sponsored post. But if Chevy’s did happen to read this post and wanted to offer me some free guacamole, I’d be totally stoked!**

Ps. If you have a Chevy’s nearby you’ll want to sign up for the compadres club. On your birthday you get a coupon (it’s e-mailed) for a free dinner. You also get e-mails with coupons and specials.
